Are You Happy, Grover Norquist?

By Bill Maher

According to the Wall Street Journal, the federal government now employs the fewest people since 1966 – despite the fact that our population has grown by over 120 million since then.

In fact, federal employment as a percentage of total employment has been on a downward slope since around 1950. The feds are doing more with less. I’m guessing computers have something to do with it. And also having only one employee per post office.

So why are the Grover Norquists of the right still ranting about the “bloated bureaucracy?” Their whole spiel was that local governments do everything better, and now local governments have seven times as many employees as the feds (and state governments have twice as many). So – problem solved, right?
